Expats’ Votes, an Essential Element of Turkish Elections

As most of the technical problems are managed the turnout of the voters is increasing from election to election having like this a great impact on the final outcome.

Less than one month away from the elections in Turkey, the situation seems calm; however, it is still difficult to make predictions about the final results. One of the main elements that has had a decisive say in the elections of 7th June, are the expats living abroad.

It can be said that not always the diaspora votes mirror the domestic votes; nevertheless, a small difference is seen. In the previous elections HDP gained 20% of the votes abroad while abroad they could receive around 13%. On the other hand AK Party got 50% of the votes abroad while in Turkey they received 41%.

Asked about the relatively low electorate turnout, Enes Bayraklı stated that the number of voters has increased compared to the first time during the presidential elections which has a turnout of only 8%. Most of the technical issues are managed so this led to a turnout of 50% in the last election, a result which is expected to increase in the 1st November elections.

Bayraklı also highlighted the fact that the expats’ votes all over the world are very important and help the political parties to gain more MP as such was the case of AK Party and HDP in the previous elections.
