AK Party won a sweeping victory in 2002 general elections and came to power alone. During its rule, AK Party has carried out structural changes in various areas particularly in economy. Owing to these achievements, AK Party won three successive elections. Improvements in public finance paved the way for Turkey to counteract negative effects of the ongoing debt crisis in European countries. Furthermore, new economic and social targets were set for 2023 and long-term program and projects were drafted in order to meet these targets.

Director for Economic Research at SETA, Erdal Tanas Karagöl wrote a report titled “Turkish Economy under AK Party Rule.” The report dwells on economic policies adopted under AK Party rule, the effect of 2008 global economic crisis on Turkish economy, government’s policies to counteract this crisis, economic targets for 2023 and necessary policies to be adopted in order to meet these targets.
