Since the late 1970s, the separatist terrorist organization PKK/KCK has been active primarily within Türkiye's borders, as well as in Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Its Syrian branch, the PYD, has sought to gain international legitimacy for its terrorist activities and territorial occupations by creating the image of a so-called "independence struggle" against the terrorist organization ISIS (Daesh) through its armed wing known as the YPG.
There is substantial evidence demonstrating the PYD’s organic ties to the PKK terrorist organization. Most notably, the PYD was established on October 17, 2003, based on instructions issued by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan from İmralı Prison and in line with the decisions made at the organization’s 8th congress, which called for expanding organizational structures not only in Türkiye but also in Iran, Iraq, and Syria.
