The panel titled “Democracy Watch: 15 July Coup Attempt: The Perceptions of Turkish Society” will be held on 4 August, 2016 at SETA Ankara.  The report with the same title will be introduced and it includes analysis of interviews made with people who gathered on the streets for Democracy Watch in 7 major cities –İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Trabzon, Sakarya and Eskişehir. The reactions and opinions of people toward the failed coup will be the focus of the panel.

The questions below will be subjected during the panel;

1) What is the demographic representativeness (age, gender, education level, occupation, political affiliation) of people on the streets?

2) What are the main motivations of people on the streets at the coup attempt night and after?

3) What is the perception of society toward the actors of the coup attempt and FETO?

4) Has the coup attempt brought a negative change of people’s perceptions toward Turkish Armed Forces?

5) What is the perception of Turkish society toward the attitude of opposition parties at the coup attempt night and after?

6) How did the leadership of President Erdoğan affected the failure of the coup and the mobilization of the Democracy Watch?

7) What is the framework of political and judicial proceeding of the putschists and where should capital punishment be placed within this framework?

The panel will be held at SETA Ankara at 14:00 to try to find answers for these and similar questions. General Coordinator of SETA Burhanettin Duran, SETA Director of Political Studies Nebi Miş, Professor at Sabancı University Halil Berktay, Sabah Ankara Correspondent Okan Müderrioğlu will join the panel as debaters and SETA Political Studies Researcher Serdar Gülener will be the moderator.

Note: Panel discussion will be held in Turkish. Turkish-English simultaneous interpretation will be provided during the panel discussion.
