Romani communities in Türkiye maintain their presence through their unique talents, lifestyles, habits, and cultures. Their common characteristics are often reflected in their traditional occupations, ways of living, and residential areas. However, they frequently face the problem of social exclusion, which leads to a range of interconnected challenges—particularly in education, employment, housing, and healthcare. These challenges often reinforce one another and are typically passed down from generation to generation, creating a persistent cycle.
For instance, unemployment lies at the core of a life without social security and a cycle of poverty, and it can also hinder children in these families from continuing their education. Especially following urban transformation projects, the displacement of Romani citizens from city centers can make it more difficult for them to access vocational training programs that guarantee employment and to reach workplaces.
Beyond this, urban transformation processes can lead to difficulties in affording new housing and result in adverse borrowing experiences for Romani individuals who already face employment and income-related hardships.
