SETA Berlin is organizing a web-panel discussion entitled “Turkish-EU Relations After the Leaders’ Summit” on Thursday, 17th of December 2020 at 17.00h (local time in Germany).

At the recent EU Leaders’ Summit on 10th-11th of December 2020, EU leaders discussed, among other topics, the future of Turkey’s current relations with the EU. While Turkey is considered as an essential strategic partner to the EU in particular with regard to topics like migration, economy, security, or counter-terrorism, however, the recent Summit once again showed a divided EU. Prior to the Summit, Turkish President Erdoğan and high-level Turkish officials had stressed the strategic nature and significance of the EU’s constructive relations. Even if from time to time the ties between both actors are shaped by ongoing political debates and differ in their political, geopolitical, security or economic interests, both actors are aware of the matter of the fact that they benefit from strategic or economic cooperation and are depending on each other to tackle for example common security threats.

During our upcoming web-panel, the panelists will discuss about the future of Turkey’s EU relations by focusing on the risks and new opportunities the EU and Turkey might encounter following the recent Leaders’ Summit. By this, a general consideration of Germany’s EU Leadership in the last six months will be also addressed, as well as significant projections for the near future.

Our web-panel discussion will be held in English. It will be broadcasted via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Journalists and embassies will be invited as audience.
