After the last round of elections, Afghanistan finds itself in a new political dispute. The frontrunners for Afghanistan’s presidency, the incumbent Ashraf Ghani and chief executive Abdullah Abdullah, have both declared victory, echoing an election crisis five years ago when competing claims by the two men led to months of turmoil. In the previous period, the US-Taliban negotiations and the ongoing armed conflict in the country have dominated the agenda in Afghanistan. After the elections, there is no sign of a solution to the Afghani quagmire and the effects of the dynamics in Afganistan may go beyond its borders.
